Due to length restrictions, our float was a bit too small.  Sarah danced along behind and played the entire parade route.  BUT, we still had loads of fun! Mike couldn’t fit his pipes in, so he played whistle.  John, played only his fiddle, and both did so magnificently!

Alyce, Kathy, Pat and Mark did a great job with whistle, bodhran, fiddle and guitar.  Sarah smiled and had fun as she danced along. Dave fiddle-dee-dee’d and Deb whistled a happy tune on the glorious day!

The crowds were huge and most appreciative.  Mark is shown in his finery, a happy man with his guitar.

The Giants danced along in front of us in the parade and the step dancers from Regan-Rankin-Holland Academy gave us thumbs up for our music! All in all, we had a fabulous time in the parade and look forward to it next year!

St Patrick’s Day Community Service Event

Part of our mission is education, and in keeping with that, Pat Wilcox and Sarah Perry took time from their day to visit Clinton Elementary School and provide music for three lunch periods.  The children were so inspired to dance and clap that they needed many reminders to eat, as they had limited time for lunch!  Brava, Pat and Sarah!

2015 MIDWEST FLEADH RESULTS

Columbus Comhaltas put on a strong showing at the 2015 Midwest Fleadh in Cincinnati on May 16. Branches from all over the Midwest Region sent individuals, ensembles, grupas and ceili bands to compete. Led by Maggie Ridgeway’s first place finish in a talent-laden group of 18 competitors in Fiddle, 12-15 that included a three-way tie and playoff for third place, our branch ultimately had three members qualify for the “All Ireland” Fleadh taking place in Sligo in August.

Additional All Ireland qualifiers from the branch included Sarah Perry, first place in Mandolin, 12-15 and Ann Elliott, third place with honors in Over 18 Whistle. We wish Maggie and Sarah the best of luck when they compete in Ireland later this summer.

The branch also had a grupa that competed for the first time and had a great experience. Members included Ann Elliott (Irish flute), Peter Elliott (flute), John Garcia (mandolin), Deb Keller-Perry (whistle), Sarah Perry (fiddle), and Kathy Simcox (bodhran).

2015 FEIS NEWS

In other competition news, Maggie Ridgeway also took first place in fiddle for the sixth straight year at the Buckeye State Feis held in Columbus on April 25. Maggie is now officially “retired” from competing in feiseanna, deciding to leave those to the dancers, and is focusing her efforts on the more music-centric fleadhanna.  Sarah Perry competed at the Columbus Feis on August 1st and was awarded a first place trophy for mandolin and a first place trophy for fiddle. She also competed at the Rockland County Feis, Tappan, NY, in July. There, Sarah was awarded a first place trophy for mandolin and a first place trophy for fiddle, as well.
